CIRS and Sick Building Syndrome
Chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) and sick building syndrome are real.
Spending time in a biologically problematic environment, most often a water-damaged building, can leave people with lasting symptoms involving the immune system, inflammation, the nervous system and metabolism.
The harder question isn't whether that happens. It's which biological pathways actually explain the symptoms, why they persist after the exposure ends, and which of the many proposed markers and treatments hold up.
That's what this section of the site is working through. Each article below takes one specific question and looks at what the research supports, what's plausible but untested, and what doesn't survive contact with the evidence.

- Does mold cause acid reflux? Yes, but the routes with real evidence run through the airways and the immune system, not through mycotoxins or histamine.
- Can mold cause swollen lymph nodes? Usually yes, but indirectly, through the respiratory infections that damp buildings cause.
- The vagus nerve and CIRS The vagus nerve genuinely controls inflammation, but nobody has measured it in anyone with CIRS.
What this section is working toward
There are a few larger questions I want to map properly over time.
The innate immune model. How biotoxins get flagged by the immune system, and how an inflammatory response ends up sustaining itself after the trigger is gone.
The specific markers. Complement, cytokines, and the roles proposed for MSH, VIP, TGF-beta1 and C4a, and how well each one is actually supported.
The environmental side. What exposure to a water-damaged building actually delivers biologically, beyond the label.
Where the model outruns the evidence. Some parts of the popular CIRS framework are well grounded and some aren't, and those are worth separating clearly.
The illness being real and every proposed explanation for it being correct are two different claims. Holding the first firmly while testing the second carefully is the approach here.
